Dear Friend in Christ,
“Swach Barat!” exclaims Fr. Thomas, MJ, from our Boys’ Home in Sirsi, India.
“That means, ‘keep our country (India) clean and green!’ This is a campaign here driven by Prime Minister Modi. It coincides with Pope Francis’ Laudato Si,
a plea to all of mankind echoing the lament of Mother Earth which is suffering the ravages of man’s selfishness and violence to God’s most precious gift to us, His creation.
Laudato Si, quoting Patriarch Bartholomew, says: ‘We must replace consumption with sacrifice; greed with generosity; wastefulness with the spirit of sharing; an asceticism moving away from what I want to what God’s world needs.’ The Holy Father’s encyclical further says, ‘Through the greatness and beauty of nature, one comes to know by analogy their Maker.’
“Here at the Boys’ Home in Sirsi we are all doing our little part to keep our land clean and green and also the public road that we walk every day. It’s an uphill battle because the attitude of Swach Barat! will take time to sink in. Yet we continue to collaborate with others here who have caught the spirit. After all, ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness.’”
