One of the greatest lay movements in the Church has been the Cursillo in Christianity. Miles Jesu is one of many initiatives that grew out of the Cursillo in the modern Church. The Miles Jesu Constitutions mention Cursillo several times as part of the founding of the Institute. Besides what is in the Constitutions, there are also several solid traditions that Miles Jesu has inherited from the Cursillo. One of them is called “group reunion” in which Cursillistas share and discuss their lives in the framework of the so-called three legs of the tripod – piety, study, and action.
A great man who has helped give many Cursillos explained a discovery he made when he was reflecting on the meaning of the three legs of the tripod for Cursillo spirituality. He said he started wondering why the Cursillo singled out those three things as the focus for a solid spiritual life. Then the words of Sacred Scripture came to his mind, when our Lord revealed
to us what was the greatest commandment, saying:
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets (Mt 22:37-40).
In a very humble and simple way, he explained his observation, “Love the Lord with all your heart and soul – that sounds like piety to me. Love the Lord with all your mind – that sounds like study to me. Love your neighbor as yourself – well, that sounds like action to me.”
So the tripod of the Cursillo keeps us focused on fulfilling the greatest commandment – to love.
