When The House Went Silent

“The COVID-19 situation changed our daily life. At our Udaya Nakshatra Boys Home in Sirsi, we were asked by the government authorities to send all 27 boys home in March 2020 and only the two Miles Jesu members and a family of three who were helping with the boys’ program remained. The house, which had been full of life and activities with the boys, suddenly became silent.”, Ronald, MJ, tells us. 

“In January 2021, the schools and colleges started classes for a limited number of students at the high school, pre-university, and college levels and 1 month later the schools started classes for 8th and 9th grade students, so 16 of our boys were able to return to the Udaya Nakshatra Boys’ Home to continue their studies. Unfortunately, the situation suddenly changed in April and the government asked all the schools and colleges to close down again, so we had to send all the boys back home except four whose parents requested they continue to stay with us due to family problems.”

“Starting in May 2021 the COVID situation seemed to be worsening everywhere in India and by June people were prohibited from traveling from one district to another. Sirsi, where we are living, was completely locked down until June 7th, Church services were not permitted, vehicle travel was limited to emergency medical needs, and people were only allowed to buy necessities between 6 A.M. and 10 A.M. on Tuesdays and Fridays.” 

“The new academic year, which usually begins in June, started online classes for the students. Many of our boys had no cell phones and their parents, who were already having difficulty providing the daily necessities for their families because they had lost their jobs, were forced to borrow money from their relatives to buy one. We have been helping the parents by paying the school fees for all the boys.”

Ronald reminds us, “Despite these challenges, we must remember that God loves us so much that He gave us this time to come back to Him!”
