Dear Friend in Christ,

“Tragedy strikes rural India every year when thousands of farmers take their own lives after crop failure and the inability to pay back loans to unscrupulous loan sharks and the relentless pressure and hassle inflicted on them by the landlords and creditors. These simple farmers become totally frustrated and lose all hope.”, Fr. Cahill, MJ, tells us.

“At least one such person has emerged, a former student of ours from here at Udaya Nakshatra home for boys (2008-2011). From a farming family himself, Prakash threw himself into our program. Working with us on our small farm, excelling in his studies, and competitive in sports, he was chosen to lead the ranks of boys who numbered about 40 at his time here. After graduating from college, he went into banking and opened a new bank (now with two branches and 18 employees) dedicated to helping poor farmers secure low interest loans so they can buy seeds and fertilizer and be independent of heartless landlords and greedy creditors. The bank, which is really Prakash himself, is understanding and merciful in collecting his loans.”

“He is now married, the father of two adorable daughters, and living the Gospel message, “Whatever you do to the least of my brethren that you do unto me.”, exercising the virtues instilled in him by his family and strengthened during his time here at Udaya Nakshatra Boys Home in Sirsi. May the Lord bless all who have supported our efforts to form young men and women to be responsible people and assets to the Church and beyond.”
