Dear Friend in Christ,
The terrorist group Boko Haram in Nigeria has just undergone a leadership change with promises of even more militant action than before. Their principal targets have been children in Christian schools. “They are mostly in the northern and eastern part of the country,” our MJ members tell us, “though even close by to us they sometimes rape and kill women who farm alone as part of a new tactic.”
Meanwhile, in the relatively safe area of Nimo, the role of Lucia, MJ, as a teacher at a nearby secondary school includes a class on moral instruction. One of her 16-year old students, Chiamaka (which means “God is Good”), approached Lucia one day after class and said that her boyfriend was pressuring her to sleep with him with the words, “If you love me, show it.” For a year Chiamaka resisted her boyfriend’s pressures, until one day he broke up with her. It was at the time of the break-up that Chiamaka’s close friend got pregnant and had to stop school. How grateful this teenage girl was to Lucia for her patient and loving counseling to stay pure and protect her future.
“So many of my students come from broken families,” Lucia tells us, “and so the challenge is all the greater to help these kids know what is right and what is wrong.”
