Dear Friend in Christ,

“When the war broke out in Ukraine at the end of February 2022, an enormous tide of refugees began flowing across the border from Ukraine into Poland,” reports Maria Van Scott, MJ, from Lublin, Poland. “Within a year, four million Ukrainians had crossed the border and two million have settled, at least temporarily, in Poland. Many people have opened their homes to refugees, always taking care to refer to them as their ‘guests’, rather than ‘exiles’, ‘war victims’,
or even ‘refugees’.”

“Here at our Miles Jesu house in Lublin, not too far from the Ukrainian border, we began assisting in the Miles Jesu Ukraine Relief efforts by hosting Ukrainian guests in early March. We were able to make two bedrooms available and our guests always have full use of the kitchen and other common areas of the house, including our chapel with the Blessed Sacrament. As of May 2023, we have hosted 32 individuals for varying periods of time (not to mention three dogs and a cat). We had one family staying here for almost six weeks, Anna (in her late 30s) and her two teenage sons. The first weekend they were here I asked the boys if they liked pizza. Their answer was a very enthusiastic “yes!” so that Sunday we sent out for pizza. They were so happy about it that we made it into our own little tradition with pizza on Sundays. The boys ALWAYS wanted pepperoni, so we’d always get that kind, and then one other one with other toppings, just to have a little variety. I have continued this tradition—though not weekly—with other families who have come. We—both guests and hosts—are very grateful for your financial support and, even more, for your prayers.”
