Dear Friend in Christ,

“Our home for underprivileged boys in Sirsi, India, is appropriately named “Udaya Nakshatra,” Morning Star, which heralds the beginning of a new day or, in this case, a new life.” writes Ronald, MJ. “Many of our 30 boys come from remote areas in the forest region and from abject poverty. Recommended by the local parish priest, they are given an opportunity to come up in life. With a balanced and regimented schedule of prayer, chores, studies, classes, work (in our area and coconut garden), and sports, the boys are being prepared to thrive in the rigors of adult life. Most of them have done well for themselves. Five of them have entered the seminary. Agit, now a bank manager, and his wife have recently given birth to a second child, Riyana, who was baptized on December 8. Prakash, the founder of a bank to benefit farmers, and his wife have been blessed with a third child. William has completed his MBA degree and earned a place in a good company. We have granted scholarships to boys who have gone for advanced degrees, including Praveen, who recently received his Master of Commerce degree. Lastly and tragically, Lawrence, 19, drowned in a river in a failed attempt to save his two friends. True to character, Lawrence lived up to the Gospel maxim: “There is no greater love than when a man lays down his life for his friends.”
