Nowhere Else to Turn

The Needy Women and Children’s apostolate of the men’s community in Awka, Nigeria, started in 2017. Joseph, MJ, tells us that most of the women and children helped live in the local area. “We are helping them because they are having difficulties and have nowhere else to turn.”, Joseph explains. “Before we help anyone, however, I personally visit with them so I know about their particular situation and am able to tailor our assistance to best meet their specific needs.”

“We have been able to help several widows directly with food and medicine. In another case, the widowed mother was only able to provide the basics for her children and did not have the extra money to pay for their school expenses, so we are paying them for her. In several other cases, we have been able to help single mothers with children establish small businesses so they are able to provide for their family.” 

“The assistance we provide for the children is solely related to the cost of their education. Because of the help we are able to provide, the children can attend school which helps ensure they get their education. In the long term, having an education improves their circumstances and also helps to bring an end to child labor.”
