Dear Friend in Christ,

Ronald, MJ, writes: “Greetings from Sirsi, India! We are very happy to share some news of our Udaya Nakshatra Boys’ Home (Morning Star Home for Boys). It is our system to admit new underprivileged students into Udaya Nakshatra in May. Out of 20 requests this year, we thought that seven really needed our assistance so we admitted those seven students. Now we have 19 boys altogether from 11 to 17 years of age. Each new student has an interesting story about his family background. But I would like to narrate the family story of John, a 17-year-old boy, a latecomer to our Boys’ Home this year.”

“John is the only son of Agnel and Fathima. Mr. Agnel is a daily wage earner. John’s mother Fathima had lost sight in one of her eyes when she was a baby when a hen pecked it. Many times John’s father, because of his own weak health, would become unconscious while working and could not work for weeks. Since his father was the only person earning, John says his parents would often not have anything to cook or eat. So they sent John to study in a hostel run by the bishop of our Diocese of Karwar until he finished high school. When John graduated from high school, he could not find a place to continue his higher studies due to his poverty. His uncle, who knew about Udaya Nakshatra, called us one day at the end of June and requested persistently to allow John admission to our Boys’ Home. We did not want to admit any more boys, as we had stopped admitting boys in May, but when we heard his story from his pleading father, we said okay. Now John is attending his first year of college, and he is exceedingly happy to stay with us at Udaya Nakshatra.”
