In 2017 the Miles Jesu men’s community in Awka, Nigeria, started the Needy Women and Children’s Apostolate to help poor women and children who are having difficulties and have nowhere else to turn. “Most of them live close by,” Joseph, MJ, tells us. “I personally visit with them before we help them so I can learn about their needs ‘first-hand’ and assess the best way to provide assistance in their particular situation. At present, we are helping several children continue their education who otherwise would not have been able to go to school because their families have great difficulty even covering daily living expenses and do not have the extra money for school expenses. Our help goes directly to the cost of their education for tuition and books. We also have been able to help several widows with expenses for food and medicine on an interim basis and, in several other cases, were able to help single mothers establish small businesses so they could become self-sufficient and provide for their families themselves.”
