Dear Friend in Christ,

Modern slavery and human trafficking victims are forced to engage in exploitative sex work, are bound to toil for little or no pay, or are married against their will. The impact is global and no country is immune. The Global Slavery Index 2018 estimates that in the United States on any given day there were 403,000 people living in conditions of modern slavery, a prevalence of 1.3 victims of modern slavery for every thousand in the country.

A great part of that number is comprised of those women and children who are victims of the global sex-trafficking trade. Forced sexual exploitation occurs across the United States. Victims are found in hotels/motels, commercial front brothels, online, in residential areas and in the street, and in escort or delivery services among others.

Children are a particularly vulnerable group, especially those outside of a supportive environment such as runaway and homeless young people without a support network. Adults and children who have survived the trauma of domestic violence, sexual assault, war and conflict remain vulnerable and are often targeted by traffickers.

Why are Americans such a big part of the demand, both within U.S. borders and abroad? Why is the enslaved and tortured supply so great?  Because the demand is insatiable.  It all boils down to ‘supply and demand’. Police Sargent Dan Steel says: “If we want to abolish the sale of humans, we must look deeper and work to fix the root causes that lead to sexual trafficking in the first place.” That’s what our S.O.S. to End Human Trafficking in America deals with: awareness of the human trafficking problem and its relationship with the ‘legal’ dilemma of the Prostitution of Society right here in the U.S.A.
