Helping the Needy in Nigeria

Dear Friend in Christ,

Joseph, MJ, tells us about the Needy Women and Children apostolate of the men’s community in Awka, Nigeria. “We started the apostolate in 2017 to help women and children, most of whom live in our area, who are having difficulties and have nowhere else to turn. Before we help anyone, I personally visit with them and get to know about their situation. That way, we are able to tailor our assistance to best meet their specific needs. We have been able to help several widows directly with food and medicine. In another case, the mother is a widow and is only able to provide the basics for her children but does not have the extra money to pay for their school expenses, so we are paying them for her. In several other cases, we have been able to help single mothers with children establish small businesses so they are able to provide for their family.” 

“The assistance we provide for the children directly is solely related to the cost of their education. We are currently helping 24 children who had stopped going to school because there was no money; instead, they were sent into the streets and markets to hawk goods while their friends are in school. Because of the help we are able to provide, the children can return to school which makes them very happy. By helping make sure they get their education, we are helping to bring an end to child labor and to improve their circumstances in the long term.”
