Dear Friend in Christ,
Presently over 100 children are taught and cared for by ten teachers under the direction of two Miles Jesu women’s community members at the St. Theresa Nursery and Primary School in Nimo, Nigeria. Lucia, MJ, headmistress of the school, tells us, “The grand finale for the parliamentary debate for all the primary schools in Nimo came up on December 28, 2022. The debate competition had been sponsored by some local citizens of Nimo, Anambra State, Nigeria, who wished to push education forward. Our pupils had begun about a year before to compete and debate with other participating schools on the motion: “This house will allow corporal punishment in schools.” They won against the neighboring school during the preliminary stage. At the semi-finals, they debated against other different qualifying schools and came out on top, both in defense of, and in opposition to, the motion. At the time of the grand finale, our pupils were among the four schools out of about eleven schools that had qualified for the finals. They came in second place in the debate competition and one of our pupils, Ogochukwu (meaning God’s gift), was chosen as the overall best speaker. They brought back a trophy to the school and are awaiting cash prizes for their months of hard work and sacrifice.”
