Dear Friend in Christ,
Miles Jesu founded the Girls’ Home in Birky, Ukraine, in 2004 to help girls who were orphans or from problem families where their parents were unable to care for them because of illness, or because they had lost their parental rights due to alcohol or drug problems, or because they had no permanent job or place of residence. Since its founding, more than 40 girls have lived in the house. Some of them were able to return to their families because of improvements in the family’s situation, some were adopted or placed with foster families, some went on to graduate from different educational institutions in a variety of professions (nurse, lawyer, chef, seamstress, tourist guide, teacher, accountant), some have married and have their own children, and one girl is preparing to join the convent.
“Currently we have eight girls living with us, ranging in age from 10 to 17,” reports Olga, MJ, “and five girls who no longer are living in the Girls’ Home but still receive full or partial support. We try to create conditions that are as close to a home as possible. The girls study at a regular school, participate in various activities such as school choir, drawing, wood burning, contemporary dance, hiking tourism (hiking in the woods and mountains and hiking trips to study history, etc.), visit museums and exhibitions, and take part in various competitions. They also have additional lessons in history and English. The girls are provided with everything necessary for study, treatment, and rest.”
