The Birky Girls’ Home, located in the Lviv region of Ukraine, was founded by the Miles Jesu Women’s Community in 2004 to help children from problem families (alcohol, drugs, illnesses that do not allow the parents to care for their children, etc.). Since its inception, forty children have been helped.

“There are always nine girls with us ages 9-16”, said Olia of the Miles Jesu Women’s Community. “All the girls have complex and interesting personalities and each has very different dreams for their future”, said Olia. “One wants to be an archaeologist, another a singer, another a bank director or politician. One of the girls who talks a lot and is so hyperactive that people often stop and comment about it, was asked by a woman in a store what she wanted to be when she grows up. She replied “A pathologist because nobody would be angry that I talk a lot.”

“Anna had very serious behavioral problems (anger, hysterics, etc.) when she came to us. Now she is undergoing a special course of treatment with a neuropathologist which is already showing good results. When she first came, she was afraid of all animals, but now the animals are her friends. She really loves our cat and, when she comes home from school, the first thing she does is check on the cat to see where she is and what she is doing. Overall she has become more calm.” 

“When Sofia came to us from the shelter, she had already studied at school for half a year but could not read at all and we were told she would never be able to because she was ‘stupid’. Learning is very hard for her but, after two and half years, she now can read and write well and she very much enjoys cooking.”
