Dear Friend in Christ,

“Aleksandra, who came to us in 2014 as the newest and youngest girl, had a lot of difficulty getting along with others because she wanted to be with her mother,” reports Olga, MJ. “Unfortunately, Aleksandra’s mother lived in a single room and was so impoverished that she had no choice but to bring her daughter to our Birky Home. Aleksandra was more fortunate than others, though, because she had a mother who wanted to be with her.”

“Lisa, who was just 10 when the government brought her to us, was like most of the other girls who never see either parent because of drug addiction and alcoholism but who can’t be adopted because their forever-absent parents have not relinquished their parental rights. In her case, both parents had been sent to prison for drug abuse.”

“It was amazing to see Lisa’s development, despite her tragic beginnings and the death of her mother when she was only 17, and to see Aleksandra settle in and thrive. The girls have truly made the best of things here at Birky where they have formed their own kind of family. They are like sisters, where the older ones help watch out for the younger ones. We now have seven young girls at our Girls’ Home in Birky and we are helping two older girls complete their studies.”
