A few days ago, in my medical transport job, a young man in his 20s stepped into my car and was complaining about having to go to the clinic to get some therapy. He said he wished he could just snap his fingers and be there instantaneously. He said that would be a great superpower.
Then he asked me, “If you had to choose a superpower, what would it be?” “I don’t know. I never really thought about it.” I replied. He gave some examples like invisibility, stopping and controlling time, and reading people’s minds. I said I would hate to be able to read people’s minds. He asked, “Why?” “Because it would be a burden to know what people are thinking.” “Huh!” was his reply. After that there was some silence. Then it came to me.
“The superpower I would want is wisdom.” “Really!?” “Yeah! For sure!” “Even over some amazing powers you could have?” he asked. I reminded him of King Solomon when he asked God for wisdom over all the blessings God was ready to give him. Imagine having that wisdom at your fingertips and knowing what to do and what to say in any given situation, even in the most difficult ones. All of a sudden, it seemed a light went on in this young man’s head. “OK! Now I get it! That would be pretty amazing!” he said. “Besides, what good are superpowers if I don’t have the wisdom to use them well. I will only end up abusing them.” I said. This is when the young man really caught on.
“Wisdom is something that God could bless me with right now if He wanted to,” he said. “I just need to follow His ways and let Him guide me.” I replied, “You are well on your way to the best superpower of them all.” Arriving at the clinic, he got out of the car in higher spirits.
