“The St. Joseph’s Soup Kitchen project in Lviv, Ukraine, dates back to the 1990s,” reports Olia Semeruk, MJ. “The first members of Miles Jesu who came to Ukraine distributed food to low-income and homeless families. There were many who were barely surviving because the country’s economy was in crisis following the collapse of the Soviet Union, so the Soup Kitchen expanded to distributing food on a daily basis to as many as 200 people.”

“Over the next ten years, circumstances improved and fewer people needed to depend upon the Soup Kitchen; however, the situation changed in 2020 due to the Coronavirus and the war in Ukraine and people again needed help, especially the most vulnerable – pensioners, people with mental illnesses and, of course, the homeless.”

“Although there are other charities in Lviv now where people can get food, the Soup Kitchen continues to serve lunch to about 60 people three times a week (soup, dairy dishes, tea, coffee, and bread). People have repeatedly said how much they like our dairy dishes because we are the only one in the city to serve them! Occasionally treats like sweets and cookies are also served, especially on holidays.”

“Life can be difficult for those who are not successful in this world, and more difficult for those who are awkward and often shamed, even by their own family. But God always cares for His poor. Being His hands on earth is a good calling.”
