Miles Jesu’s communities in western Ukraine are composed of members of the Greek Catholic Ukrainian rite, a rite of the Roman Catholic Church whose rituals and discipline find roots in the liturgy of St. John Chrysostom and other influences of the East.
In the city of Bortnyky, Miles Jesu operates a home for orphaned or semi-orphaned boys with ages ranging from 7 to 17. At the present there are 28 boys, 8 are studying at colleges. The rest study at the school on the grounds. Having a school on the premises means the boys get more one-on-one time with the teachers as there are at most seven per class. Within the approximately 15 acres the home comprises, there is an orchard where they grow mostly apples. Last year, they completed a new barn to house cows, pigs, chickens and rabbits. There is a crop field of 35 hectares is a nearby village, where they grow potatoes, wheat, barley, oats and various root vegetables. This style of living means they are mostly self-sufficient with regard to food; surplus is sold to local people. The produces is also used at the soup kitchen for the poor in L’viv and also the girls home in Birky. The boys all take part in helping according to their capacity.
The home is operated more like a family than an institute. The boys respond better to this environment, and it helps them learn vital skills to use later on in life.
