Dear Friend in Christ,

“We had decided to limit the number of boys in the Boy’s Home to 20 for the 2018/2019 school year but they kept coming here after the cutoff date.” Thomas, MJ, tells us. “First came Aaron who had tragically lost his mother in March. His father said he could manage his two daughters but his 12-year-old son was ‘all boy’ and pleaded with us to take him in. Next came Francis, the ‘Huck Finn’ of India. With a sick mother who was homebound and an alcoholic father, he had been roaming ‘school free’ for the past two years. His parish priest brought him here but, as soon as the priest left, Francis bolted away. Fortunately, we caught up with him two miles down the road, brought him back, and now he is well adjusted. Then came a group of five Siddi boys. They are Afro-Indians whose ancestors were brought as slaves and they lived in a thick forest about 30 miles from here where there are still tigers and wild elephants. Their families are very poor and many are broken by an environment where there is alcoholism, promiscuity and wife beating. All the new boys have added much strength to our home (ultimately, we ended up with 32 boys).”
