Living Sermons
By Very Rev. Fr. Alphonsus Maria Duran, MJ

What the world needs today is people who are fully committed to the following of Jesus; to love Jesus. Out of this internal super abundance of life, we radiate Jesus in our lives.

We need sermons too. There is no doubt of that. But even sermons are not enough. How many people go to church on Sunday, hear a sermon, and then live the rest of the week like there is no God. Today the Church needs people who by the example of their daily lives are "living sermons".

You may ask, "How can i be a sermon in my work, in my studies, in my profession five days a week, eight hours a day?" Well, try your best; keep the Commandments. Be honest, be fair, be a good worker, be punctual, and be cheerful " all those things. If sometimes you fail, have no shame to repent. If one day you"re not on time for work make no qualms about it. Apologize, and try to be there all the earlier the next day. That"s a good sermon on repentance.

The world today needs people who are giving a good example in their daily lives. Sermons are important, but the people who practice those sermons are very important too. We need good lawyers who are Christian in their principles; who can preach not only with sermons, but with their daily practice of the law, being just, being fair, being merciful, being compassionate, being willing to help, even at times with no recompense. We need doctors, mechanics, and politicians doing the same thing. We need a president who is a Christian through and through, a good Catholic through and through.

We need good families. See the tremendously bad things going on in society because the family is being torn apart, falling to pieces. We need good fathers and good mothers. We need all these things, and that is what Miles Jesu is all about.

We also need to be in the forefront of the advancement of the world, as the Church always has been. The great advancements of the world were promoted by the Church. Why? Because the Church is the instrument of God, the "sacrament of God" on this earth for the sanctification of men, in everything, both supernatural and natural.

The Church was the tremendous instrument which kept up the cultural world in the Middle Ages. The monks spent hours and hours writing books when there were no printing presses. Many monks were great discoverers of scientific principles.

We had a very good example when the astronauts went into space. One of them, even though he was not Catholic, read the Bible from there to the whole earth, "In the beginning..." That was a tremendously good example. He was a Christian. Suppose he had been a Catholic " he would not only have been giving witness of Christianity, but he would also have been giving witness of full Faith.

As St. Maximilian Kolbe said, we need to study the methods used by the evil forces in the world. They are infiltrating the world to destroy the idea of God. They pretend to be friends of God, but are really enemies of God " the Communists, the Jehovah"s Witnesses, and so many others too. They are really hurting the Heart of Jesus because they attack His divinity.

We need Catholics to be right there, as scientists, going into space, promoting aviation and finding new cures in medicine. Who says Christianity is against advancement? That is not Christianity. It is a very negative idea of God. God has given man intelligence precisely to co-create the world with Him. Any little thing we do, we are helping God to create this world, and if we do it in a positive way, what a beautiful thing it is. That is what we need and what we should do. That is why Our Lord out of His Mercy created and founded Miles Jesu, to have Soldiers of Jesus in the forefront of every single aspect of life.
