Loyalty to the Holy Father

“And this is the infallibility which the Roman Pontiff, the head of the college of bishops, enjoys in virtue of his office, when, as the supreme shepherd and teacher of all the faithful, who confirms his brethren in their faith, by a definitive act he proclaims a doctrine of faith or morals. And therefore his definitions, of themselves, and not from the consent of the Church, are justly styled irreformable, since they are pronounced with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, promised to him in blessed Peter, and therefore they need no approval of others, nor do they allow an appeal to any other judgment.”

	A Special Time, A Special Call This fall the Church began a special year of grace, the “Year of Faith,” which began on October 11, 2012 (50th anniversary of the opening of Vatican II) and will conclude on the Feast of Christ the King, November 24, 2013. The opening of this special year coincided with the General Synod of Bishops, a meeting held on the theme of “the new evangelization.”
	The Church in the United States I greet all of you with fraternal affection and I pray that this pilgrimage of spiritual renewal and deepened communion will confirm you in faith and commitment to your task as Pastors of the Church in the United States of America. As you know, it is my intention in the course of this year to reflect with you on some of the spiritual and cultural challenges of the new evangelization.
	Nourished by the Word of God In the Twelfth Synodal Assembly, Bishops from throughout the world gathered around the word of God [...] Together we listened to and celebrated the word of the Lord. We recounted to one another all that the Lord is doing in the midst of the People of God, and we shared our hopes and concerns. All this made us realize that we can deepen our relationship with the word of God only within the “we” of the Church, in mutual listening and acceptance.
	Loving Christ as He Has First Loved Us On 11 October 1962, 48 years ago, Pope John XXIII inaugurated Vatican Council II.
